AURA Sleep Mask With Headphones Review: When His Snoring Wakes You at 3 AM
I earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. No brand pays to be reviewed here. How this site makes money.
If you've read anything else on this site, you know the pattern. You fall asleep fine. Then something pulls you up around 3 AM and the second half of the night is gone. For a lot of women that something has a name, and he's lying next to you, breathing like a leaf blower. This review is about one sleep mask with headphones, the AURA, and whether it earns a place on your nightstand for that exact problem. I haven't slept in this one myself. What follows comes from the maker's specs, the checkout as it stood on October 15, 2026, and the research on masking sound.
What is the AURA sleep mask with headphones?
It's a contoured eye mask made by Velin, a brand of Affiliate Brands, LLC, with a pair of thin speakers sewn into pockets over the ears. You pair it with your phone and play whatever helps you drift: a podcast, an audiobook, rain, brown noise.
- Blackout: 3D cups that block light without touching your eyelids or lashes
- Speakers: flat, cushioned, and they slide so you can line them up with your ears
- Connection: Bluetooth 5.4, works with iPhone, Android, tablets and laptops
- Battery: up to 10 hours, about 2 hours to charge over USB-C
- Sleep timer: 60 minutes or 2 hours, then the audio shuts off
- Weight: 113 g (about 4 oz), with a travel pouch and USB-C cable
- Washing: the electronics lift out, the fabric hand-washes
Where to buy the AURA sleep mask, and what does it cost?
Only through Velin's official checkout, which is where the 90-day guarantee applies. On October 15, 2026 the checkout showed these prices, with the SLEEP26 code already applied:
| Package | Price | Per mask |
|---|---|---|
| 1 mask | $79.99 | $79.99 |
| 2 masks | $143.98 | $71.99 |
| 3 masks | $191.97 | $63.99 |
Two things to watch at checkout. Shipping protection for $4.95 comes already ticked, so untick it if you don't want it. And the checkout only accepts US addresses, so if you're reading from Canada, the UK, Australia or New Zealand, you can't order it yet. Payment goes by card, PayPal or Klarna.
Does a sleep mask with headphones block snoring?
Block, no. Cover up, often. This matters, so let's be precise. The AURA has no active noise cancellation, so it doesn't erase his snoring the way a pair of noise-cancelling headphones on a plane erases engine hum. What it does is play a steady sound close to your ears, so each snore stands out less against the background.
That's the mechanism with the best evidence behind it. A study that played recorded ICU noise to sleeping volunteers found that adding white noise on top reduced the number of times they were roused, because it shrank the gap between the background and the loud peaks (Stanchina et al., Sleep Medicine, 2005). A snore is a loud peak. And the cost of those peaks is real: in a Mayo Clinic study, bed partners of men who snored lost about an hour of sleep a night on average (Beninati et al., Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 1999).
Where it falls short is very loud, very low snoring. Snoring is mostly low-pitched sound, and a mask's thin speakers can only do so much at a volume that's comfortable to sleep through. If he rattles the windows, you may need earplugs under the mask, and he probably needs a doctor more than you need a gadget (more on that below).
Is a sleep mask with headphones comfortable for side sleepers?
This is where the AURA is built well. Earbuds are the usual alternative, and anyone who has rolled onto one at 2 AM knows how that goes. Here the speakers are flat discs buried in foam, and they slide inside the band so you can line them up with your ears instead of finding them on your cheekbone. The eye cups are hollowed, so the blackout doesn't press on your lids. At 113 g it's heavier than a plain silk mask, though, and you'll feel it the first few nights.
Can it help you get back to sleep at 3 AM?
Maybe, and the sleep timer is the reason I'd use it. If you're lying there at 3 AM with a mind that won't idle, a familiar audiobook gives your attention somewhere boring to go (the racing thoughts at 3 AM piece covers why that works for some people and not others). Set the timer for 60 minutes and the sound stops once you're under.
That matters because constant noise all night isn't free. A 2026 study of 25 adults found pink noise played through the night at 50 decibels in an otherwise quiet room was linked to about 18.6 fewer minutes of REM sleep (Basner et al., Sleep, 2026). I covered the tension between that study and the masking one in does white noise or a fan help you stay asleep. Short version: use sound to cover a real disruption, keep it low, and let it switch off. Whether a 2-hour timer is enough when he starts up again at 4 AM is a question I can't answer for you.
What is the AURA's 90-day money-back guarantee?
You get 90 days to try it. If it doesn't work for you, send it back in its original packaging for a full refund or a replacement. Shipping and handling aren't refunded, so keep the box. To start a return, email Velin at hello@velinsleep.com or call (330) 642-4364 on weekdays, 9 AM to 5 PM Eastern.
What are the downsides?
- No active noise cancellation. Loud, deep snoring can still get through.
- US shipping only, for now.
- You have to remember to charge it, and the electronics have to come out before every wash.
- Heavier than a plain mask, and some people never get used to anything on their face.
- Returns cost you the shipping, and the item has to go back in its original packaging.
- The $4.95 shipping protection is pre-ticked at checkout.
Sleep mask with headphones vs earbuds vs headband: which one?
| Mask with headphones (AURA) | Sleep earbuds | Headband headphones | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blocks light | Yes, total blackout | No | Partly, if pulled down |
| Side sleeping | Flat speakers, outside the ear | Can press into the ear | Flat speakers, outside the ear |
| Against loud snoring | Masks it | Some models seal the ear or cancel noise | Masks it |
| Best for | Snoring plus early light or a partner's phone screen | Loud snoring, if they don't hurt | Snoring without light problems |
If the 5 AM sun through the blinds is half of your problem, the mask is the one that deals with both. If it's only noise and you can sleep with something in your ears, earbuds go further.
When to see a doctor
For him: loud snoring with pauses, gasps or choking sounds, or daytime sleepiness, can be obstructive sleep apnea, and that's a medical problem a mask on your face won't fix. For you: if you keep waking at 3 AM even on nights he's away, the snoring isn't the whole story. Women in this age group are often told it's insomnia when it's apnea of their own, which I wrote about in sleep apnea misdiagnosed as insomnia in women. Either way, it's worth bringing to your doctor.
Questions people ask
Can you buy the AURA sleep mask on Amazon?
The AURA sleep mask is sold by Velin through its official checkout. A listing on Amazon, Walmart or eBay under a similar name isn't verified by the maker, and a mask bought there isn't covered by Velin's 90-day money-back guarantee. Several unrelated brands also sell masks called Aura.
Does the AURA sleep mask ship to Canada, the UK or Australia?
No. As of October 15, 2026, the official checkout only accepts United States addresses, and Velin's terms say it ships within the US only.
Can my partner hear what I'm listening to?
At a low volume, generally not. The speakers sit inside the mask against your ears rather than playing into the room. At high volume some sound will leak, as it does with any headphones.
How long does the battery last?
Velin lists up to 10 hours of playback and about 2 hours to a full charge over USB-C. The sleep timer can switch the audio off after 60 minutes or 2 hours.
How do you wash a sleep mask with headphones?
On the AURA, you lift out the speakers, wiring and control module, then hand-wash the fabric and let it dry completely before putting the electronics back.
Is the AURA sleep mask the same as other Aura sleep masks?
No. This review covers the AURA Bluetooth sleep mask made by Velin, a brand of Affiliate Brands, LLC. Other companies sell unrelated masks under the Aura name, so check the maker before you read reviews or buy.
